Milwaukee Road Thrall Caboose    $30.00

Shell and Roof Castings

Thrall caboose model
The Milwaukee Road received one hundred new bay window cabooses from Thrall Car Manufacturing Company in 1956. These cabooses lacked the horizontal ribs as seen on the previous shop built cabooses and were instead identified by their riveted side panels. Original numbers were 02115-02214.

Vince Kotnik built the master model of the caboose and was kind enough to allow me to make a mold of it. The body shell and roof are cast in light gray resin. Parts should be washed in Mineral Spirits in order to remove the mold release compound. Some window flash will need to be cleaned up. The modeler will be required to add the bay window, trucks, roofwalk, grab irons, window glass and of course paint and decals. Most of these parts can be taken from an Fox Valley models rib side caboose with low bay window and drop equalized trucks.

The curved caboose grab irons will need to be hand formed by the builder. Also, the Fox Valley Models end railings will need to be slightly modified as the outermost post is not quite long enough to reach the roof as the roof on the Thrall caboose sits slightly higher. I clipped the piece off and formed a new part from brass wire. Also to be completely accurate the Thrall caboose should have a steel running board.

I painted my model with Tru-Color Milwaukee Road Orange and used Microscale decal set #60-1328 Milwaukee Road Steel Cabooses 1950-1080 to complete it.
